Standards Referenced Grading (SRG)
ALL Photography classes here at East High are SRG. What does that mean for you/your student?
* It means that instead of grading your student on things like participation, effort, attitude, and work completion, we can ONLY grade on the
standards for each class (please see the images below), showing what a student has ACTUALLY LEARNED about a topic! :)
(There is NO extra-credit in SRG since it is about ACTUAL KNOWLEDGRE learned, not just completion of tasks)
* Each class has 4 different topic scores they will be graded on. Some work will be graded on all 4 topics while others will only be graded on
some of the topics, depending on the expectations of the assignment/project. This means I will assign up to 4 grades per assignment.
* Score of 4 - you DO NOT need a 4 to get an "A" in class. This score is for the student who understands the material, can apply the material
AND can make critical thinking skills to show knowledge comprehension BEYOND the basic material, while challenging themselves to do more
than the average student.
* Score of a 3 - this is where we are shooting for in instruction. This means the student is completely able to understand the material, using
vocabulary and apply the knowledge to use them in real life.
* Score of a 2 - this is where the student is working toward understanding and applying the material but isn't all the way there yet. Maybe they
know the vocabulary but have not quite grasped the application of the knowledge. At the beginning of the semester this is a very reasonable
place to be.
* Score of 1 - this score means that the student is performing below average in the comprehension of the material presented. The may need to
use their time more wisely in class, they may need to study more, they may need to come in for a little extra help. There is ALWAYS time to
improve the scores... but PLEASE don't wait too long (for my sanity!) :)
PLEASE READ THIS NEXT PART!!!
* PLEASE DO NOT get stuck looking at an SRG class letter grade until the END of the semester!!!
* Unfortunately, the computer averages the scores I post for each topic, but I EXPECT improvement over the course of the semester.
* So PLEASE look at the scores received for each assignment to see if their is a steady increase in scoring (that is what I am looking for and hoping for when I input topic scores)
* I DO NOT average the lower scores for assignments from the beginning of the semester into the rest of the scores for the semester.
* I look for progress and THAT is how I determine what I manually put in for the their topic score grade.
* PLEASE don't hesitate to contact me is you need any further clarification of how this works for grading in my room.
